University of Toronto, The First FHLIP Conference (2024)

I was privileged to serve as the Master of Ceremony for the inaugural Future of Health Leadership, Informatics, and Policy (FHLIP) Conference at the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation (IHPME) at Hart House. In this role, I expertly coordinated content panels, presentations, and discussions, ensuring a dynamic and engaging event. Additionally, I supported both the scientific advisory panel and the organizing committee, contributing to the conference’s overall success.

Personalized/Precision Medicine

I firmly believe that Personalized/Precision Medicine (PM) is the future of healthcare. Leading multiple research projects, I have explored the features and challenges of PM. My first research project, published as a white paper titled “Preparing for Precision Medicine in Ontario: A Current State Assessment” in the Canadian Healthcare Technology journal, highlighted the critical need for data sharing and AI integration. My passion lies in designing and implementing a PM ecosystem that delivers precise clinical interventions using advanced data sciences and clinical business intelligence solutions.

Sharing Experience at Skills for Change

As a program specialist at Skills for Change, I pioneered the development of Ontario’s first Health Informatics Bridging Program (HIBP) for internationally trained individuals (ITIs). This innovative program offers newcomers comprehensive career counselling, mentoring, and training opportunities in the health informatics field. By establishing a robust support network, I successfully trained and empowered over 100 ITIs, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to excel in their new careers in health informatics.

Advancing Patient Care at Infoclin

As a Clinical Data Scientist at Infoclin Inc., I played a pivotal role in developing a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for physicians. My work involved cleaning, wrangling, normalizing, categorizing, and analyzing EMR data using machine learning to enhance clinical decision-making. Additionally, I developed clinical software to support opioid management under Dr. Andrea Furlan at the Toronto Rehab Institute. This collaboration led to the creation of the web-based software, Opioid Manager, which effectively manages opioid prescribing and tapering practices, significantly improving patient care outcomes.

Pioneering Preventive Medicine in the Private Sector

In 2013, I founded the first Institute of Preventive Medicine in Iran (IPMSYB), bringing together a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement evidence-based health initiatives. The institute features departments in Health Informatics, Psychology and Mental Health, Drug Abuse Prevention, Lifestyle Change through Diet and Exercise, Clinical Quality Improvement, and Family Health Improvement. In collaboration with the UNODC and Welfare Organization, we initiated projects to prevent drug abuse in youth and enhance cognitive health in the elderly for the first time. These efforts have significantly contributed to the advancement of preventive medicine in Iran.

Passionate About Quality Improvement and Patient Care

As the head of a regional public health organization, I spearheaded the implementation of the Japanese 5S methodology in hospital settings for the first time, customizing it for clinical environments. This initiative led to the standardization of over 50 clinical and administrative processes, resulting in significant cost savings and enhanced stakeholder satisfaction. Additionally, I designed and integrated the ‘Instant Reporter’ software into the Hospital Information System (HIS). This software enabled anonymous reporting of clinical errors, substantially improving clinical processes and overall patient care quality.

Researching and Policy Making at ADRC

After earning my Master’s in Public Health, I co-founded the first public Addiction Research Centre (ADRC) within Iranian medical universities. As executive director, I led the training of students and funding of numerous research projects focused on addiction. My role involved providing evidence-based guidelines and recommendations for national policymakers, significantly contributing to developing addiction treatment and prevention strategies. This work established ADRC as a principal advisory body, influencing national health policies and advancing addiction research in Iran.

Introducing Alcohol Abuse Prevention in Iran

As the first Ph.D. candidate in Iran focusing on alcohol abuse, I spearheaded the coordination of thefirst inaugural International Congress of Alcohol Abuse in Iran. This groundbreaking event brought together over 100 international researchers and organizations to address the pressing issue of alcohol abuse. A highlight of the congress was the unveiling of a commemorative statue of Zakariya Razi, the Persian physician who discovered alcohol.
